Headache Rack

A headache rack is a common exterior accessory for a pick-up truck. They are essential for trucks carrying heavy loads, by securing them and protecting the rear window from damage as well as the passengers in the cab of the truck.

They can be custom fit and designed based on your truck’s make and model. They are also often equipped with internal wiring so that wiring can be mounted safely on the headache rack and connected to the truck’s electrical system.

Deciding which type of headache rack to install on your truck depends on what purpose you need it for. They are designed to secure different types of items and what you install should match your needs appropriately. There are four common uses for a headache rack. The first is to secure cargo. For instance, of course, since you have a pick-up truck, you know there is ample room to lay down an item in the cab or your truck. However, if something you were hauling need to remain standing up, you need to find a way to secure it to your truck. With a headache rack, you can safely secure the item to rack which will stabilize it against the back window of the truck. This may be helpful if you are carrying chemicals, for instance, that would be unstable if lying on its side.

Second, most headache racks are installed for construction and contractor workers to haul ladders. With a headache rack, you can secure the ladder from the back of your cab across the top of the truck without causing damage to the vehicle, while securing it as well. Aside from ladders, the same set-up can be used to transport other longer items that will not fit horizontally in the back of your truck.

Third, headache racks can also be used to mount additional lights. You can order a headache rack that has a special wiring system to link additional lights to the electric wiring system in your truck. This may be helpful if you are hauling a large load, or simply if you want extra accessories for your truck. Last, a headache rack can be installed to do the combination of these purposes plus secure a large toolbox to the back of your truck. You can specially fit the headache rack to the length and width of your headache rack to secure it firmly to the back of the truck.

Some headache racks are designed with several poles across the back, or in a crossed cage like fashion for extra securing options. Sometimes the headache rack is designed with slants, almost like an exterior blind, that keeps the cab of the truck cool, while at the same time protecting the cab from items you are hauling. This is seen widely in the Southwest, where hot temperatures are year-round.
Most of the headache racks are relatively easy to install. They often come in parts that can be assembled by the owner. Some of the racks can be taken off the truck and used for storage when not hauling items.

Truck owners buy the racks for their functionality but also for their look on the trucks. There are lots of accessories for the headache racks like lights, antennas and arrow sticks. The cost of the headache racks varies based on the vehicle and type, but for the most part are relatively inexpensive and can be installed by the owner without problem. Some trucks will come with the headache racks already installed. There are many different brands and types available for sale online and in auto accessory stores.
